God's Standards

Updated: Jul 6, 2021

“Consider your own calling, brothers and sisters. Not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth.” 1 Corinthians 1:26

Today's first reading should offer each of us much consolation. Yes, the fact that St. Paul is listing off reasons why we may be seen as weak in the world should be comforting. Crazy, right? Not really. Paul goes on to remind us that God chooses the “foolish of the world to shame the wise”, the “weak of the world to shame the strong”, and the “lowly and despised of the world, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who are something”.

You can spend your whole life chasing accolades and status that will make you great in this world, but it will not matter in the end. God, in Jesus Christ, has given us what we need to serve and love the Father. God uses our weaknesses and what the world sees as useless for His glory. Forget about what the world says. Let’s give glory to God.
