St. Matthias: God's Chosen Servant

Updated: Jul 6, 2021

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

How often do we try to earn love? How often do we try to prove our worth? I know I have struggled with this in my life. We all strive to be ‘qualified’ in some way. This even occurs in our relationship with God. Now, don't get me wrong. Being good at something, working hard, or desiring to get better is not bad. In fact, those are very good! But, we must look at WHY we are doing them. What is our motivation?

Trying to earn God’s love can be damaging to our relationship with Him. Do we strive to earn His love by achievements? Do we feel like we aren’t worthy of His love because of our mistakes? The good news is that we CAN’T earn His love, and we CAN’T be unlovable to God. All we have is given to us by Him. We can never qualify ourselves to do His work or to spread the Gospel. Only He can do that for us.

Today is the feast of St. Matthias. For those of you who are unfamiliar with St. Matthias, he was the Apostle chosen to replace Judas, the betrayer of Jesus. His story, seen at the end of the first chapter of the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 1:23-26), is one that brings me much peace and confidence in the Lord. His story reminds us that God knows our hearts and has called us to a life only we can live. We don’t qualify ourselves, the Lord qualifies us for the life He has planned for us. Not everyone is called to be a speaker, not everyone is called to be a doctor. . . you are called to be authentically you. Sometimes you might not get what you were hoping for, but that just means the Lord has something greater planned for you! That greater plan is something only you can do. He will give you what you need. Today, ask the Lord to help you surrender to Him, allowing Him to give you what you need for the life He has planned for you, and leave your plans behind. Remember, He doesn’t call the equipped, He equips the called.

“So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. Then they prayed, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this apostolic ministry from which Judas turned away to go to his own place.” Then they gave lots to them, and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was counted with the eleven apostles.” Acts 1:23-26 (NABRE)

With Peace and Love, your brother in Christ,
